Recycler allegedly finds foetus in a dustbin

A recycler allegedly found a foetus while he was rummaging through the dustbins in search of cans for recycling.

A recycler made a shocking discovery in one of the dustbins at a complex in Birchleigh North on May 17.

According to Sgt Barbara-Anne Ferreira, spokesperson at Norkem Park SAPS, the recycler allegedly found a foetus while rummaging through the dustbins for cans for recycling.

“Inside the bin was a bag. He opened the bag and found a foetus, estimated to be about eight months old. Shocked, he phoned the police,” said Ferreira.

“Members arrived on the scene and opened an inquest docket. The baby was dead and the mother not known to the police yet.”

Sharon Rushton, founder and director of Life Link Pregnancy Crisis Centre, was saddened to learn about the foetus.

“It truly is sad that women resort to such extreme measures when there are services available,” said Rushton.

“We encourage women in crisis to seek counselling before making such decisions.”

The centre is a non-profit Christian organisation providing positive alternatives to abortion.

“Our services include, but are not limited to, clarity on life before birth, pregnancy crisis counselling, pre and post-adoption advice, adoptions, abortion information, post-abortion counselling and support for single mothers,” said Rushton.

The centre also provides positive alternatives to abandonment through the organisation’s initiative, Jeremiah’s Hope which is a 24-hour baby safe.

“Instead of abandoning babies at fields, dustbins and other unsafe places, we are providing a safer option for mothers who feel they are unable to care for their babies,” shared Rushton when the baby safe was launched in 2020.

The organisation also offers counselling for women and mothers every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 9:00 and 13:00.

The centre is situated at 10 Du Plessis Avenue, Kempton Park. For more information contact the organisation on 083 562 6106.
