Marketing and media liaison for Hospice East Rand Jonquil Siepman said 12 healthcare workers received the opportunity to upskill themselves, which was made possible by the assistance of a Kempton Park-based company, Stefanutti Stocks.

Jonquil said Stefanutti, as a company, has a culture of investing in people to provide a framework for personal growth and development.

She highlighted that the healthcare workers, through this opportunity, were equipped with information and practical skills in palliative care to aid them in caring for patients in a home-based healthcare environment.

According to Jonquil palliative care is specialised medical care that improves the quality of a patient’s life as well as that of their families while facing the challenges associated with a life-threatening or life-limiting illness.

Jonquil said one way palliative care can be achieved is through early identification. Other methods include the assessment, treatment and control of pain and other challenges – physical, psychosocial or spiritual.

“Most healthcare workers have not been equipped with the necessary palliative care skills,” said Jonquil.

Healthcare workers were recently given the opportunity to attend a course on palliative care, which was facilitated by Hospice East Rand. A Kempton Park company sponsored the course.

“Hospice East Rand can fill this void through the training courses it provides.”
