City neglects Kempton’s parks

Parents could no longer send their children to play in the park.

Kempton Park residents have been complaining that parks in the city have been neglected and left in a filthy and unkempt state for too long.

Residents told Express conditions of most parks in the area hinder the community and children from safely using the facilities.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said the park in Edleen has not been maintained by the City of Ekurhuleni to the point of the community having to burn the grass to slow down the growth during the rainy season.

The community called in the fire department to help contain the fire.

“That park has been left unattended since the beginning of the pandemic,” said the resident.

When visiting the park, Express discovered that another park on Maraboe Road in Norkem Park and Inid Wengel Park on Monument Road was left in similar states, which included the negligence of grass-cutting and maintenance of swings in the play areas.

Anonymous also said parents could no longer allow their children to play in the park in Edleen as the environment was not satisfactory and the swings had not been maintained or upgraded.

“There have been various requests to the council to upgrade the park and instal more features for children and adults; however, these requests have been ignored over the years,” she said.

Express tried to obtain comment from Ward 104 Clr Tracey Lourenco and spokesperson of the City of Ekurhuleni Zweli Dlamini on the maintenance of parks in the area. Comment was requested by 12:00 on April 12. At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
