The Future Initiative raises awareness on substance abuse

The campaign taught residents the value of their lungs and the importance of taking care of them.

The Love Your Lungs campaign was held on March 26 at Ivory Park Community Hall by the Future Initiative, an NPO, to educate youth about substance abuse.

The campaign brought youngsters and speakers together to offer their insights on creating a drug-free community.

The initiative had door-to-door and walkabout sessions, inviting community members to take part in the campaign.

In doing so, they also educated the community about the hazards of drug use.

They urged drug addicts to stop using and get treatment.

The Future Initiative secretary, Christina Sidumo, explained they act as a link between recovery centres and substance abuse victims.

“We launched the campaign on February 12 and went to hot spots in Ivory Park to raise awareness about drugs and this campaign,” said Sidumo.

“We are calling on the Department of Social Development, psychologists government rehab centres and the community, professionals and other individuals to stand with us, as this will be an ongoing project throughout the year. We intend to conduct another event with parents, community leaders, addicts and government authorities,” said Sidumo.
