According to Johan Bester, the club’s vice-chairperson of rugby affairs, the club was quiet for some time due to the impact of the pandemic.

“The club’s management has been restructured, and we have great plans in store,” said Bester.

“The aim is to have two senior sides and one u-20 side. This also forms part of the requirement for the Valke Merlin League we will compete in. Our goal is to one day play in the bigger league as well. We boast exciting new coaches with a lot of experience.”

Among the new editions to the club is head coach Rynardt Abrahams, who has already been training players for several weeks every Tuesday and Thursday from 18:45 to 21:00.

“All is going good thus far. The guys have a great mentality in the sense of doing what is expected of them,” said Abrahams.

“People can expect to see something different to what they are used to, we are going to play some expansive rugby.

“One of the coaches said they were very forward-orientated, so we will play expansive and running rugby which is something to look forward to.”

The league is scheduled to start in April and when asked what he, as a coach, looks for in players, he said: “Effort and willingness to want to learn. Join us to see what it is about. Give it a shot.”

Bester said the club was one to beat during the 80s and 90s and they intend to revive its glory days.

The club’s junior chairperson, James Barnardt, said they are excited about reviving the club. A junior side is among our immediate goals. We want to bring the youngsters (both girls and boys) to the field,” said Barnardt.

“More of our plans for the club will be revealed as time goes, but one of the things we also can’t wait to see in action is women’s rugby.”
