The club, now situated in Deodar Street, Pomona, moved its premises with a vision to add value to the bowling fraternity by building South Africa’s first seven rink rhino turf bowling green.

Over R2.5-million was invested into the club’s vision, with further plans of building more greens to grow bowling in South Africa as well as to grow the club.

The club now boasts a venue consisting of a clubhouse, a bar and a restaurant serving daily meals and catering at reduced prices, offering its clientele savings during these challenging times.

With a strong bowling presence within the Ekhuruleni district, Avion recently celebrated its bowlers for their outstanding showcase in the annual club championships as well as those who were selected for the districts.

“Moving the club was by no means a light decision nor an easy task, having seen Avion endure a loss of a few of its club members,” said Cobus Galloway, club chairperson.

He added that the club’s move also came with a lot of positives.

Avion boasts over 71 BSA-registered members alongside 45 dung beetles or non-BSA registered players.

At the event, the club recognised several players.

A sterling performance by bowlers Cobus Galloway and Karen Galloway ensured the pair walked away with the singles championship titles for both men and ladies.

Brian Harley and Rob Beatty were selected for the district men’s team, while Bennie Vister and Cobus Galloway cracked the district B men’s team.

Karen Galloway was selected to the district B ladies team.

In addition, Brian Harley made it to the last eight in the Men’s Singles Nationals.

Among the other players from Avion who excelled recently were Jarid James and Gareth Rees-Gibbs, who were both selected for the trials for the Disability Commonwealth Games which will take place later this year.

“Bowling is not just about the sport but also about the gathering of people in a community and building good relationships to uplift that community in a better way through a great game,” said Galloway.

For 2022 Avion has set its sights on achieving some heavy goals to add even more value to its local community.

The club hopes to add an extra green, renovate the club further and add shade covers on the patio among other planned projects.

The AGM also saw the election of a new committee, featuring Cobus Galloway as the president and Paula Harley as vice for the position.

The treasurer position will be filled by Judy van den Heever and Karen Galloway will take up the position of secretary.

The competition secretary will be Wally Duncan and bar convenor will be Tommy Visser, while Hanlie Duncan will oversee events and catering.

Avion encouraged the local community to visit the club and consider participating in a social game of bowls.
