On January 14 at 05:00, a 42-year-old man had dropped off a friend in Umfuyaneng Section when he was approached by three men.

Thembisa police corporate communications officer Const Patricia Mgijima said one of the men then took out a firearm and demanded car keys, while his accomplices threatened him with knives. His silver-grey VW Polo was taken.

The victim was able to contact the tracker firm with the help of community members, and the vehicle was found in Esselen Park.

“With the help of Thembisa SAPS Sgt Boya and Const Magagula, the suspects were caught in the act of stripping the auto parts. Two managed to flee the scene and the 20-year-old was pursued and apprehended by the police.”
He faces charges of hijacking, possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and drug possession.

Mgijima said community members must be vigilant when driving late at night or early in the morning, as these are the most common times for suspects to strike.

“Community members should also avoid sitting in their cars outside houses or driveways, as these are easy targets for criminals,” said Mgijima.
