WATCH: Fire at substation cuts power supply

“Foam was used to suppress and cool down the transformers.”

Two transformers at the Cullip Substation, in Olifantsfontein, were affected by an early morning fire at the substation on Friday.

Power supply in surrounding areas has been interrupted as a result of the blaze.

“The one transformer was actively burning while another was partially affected. All transformers, including the other two that were not affected by the fire, had to be switched off,” said Eric Maloka, Disaster ad Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson.

Maloka also said the fire has been extinguished.

“Foam was used to suppress and cool down the transformers,” explained Maloka.

“The two unaffected transformers will be switched on in an hour. This will translate to 80 percent of the power to be restored. We advise residents and businesses nearby to reduce their power usage at this time to avoid possible trips when power is restored.

“Technicians will test the affected transformers, especially the one that was actively burning, to determine whether it can be repaired or if a new transformer will be needed.”

Maloka also added that updates will be communicated accordingly.

Newly opened Albertina Sisulu Corridor and Olifantsfontein fire stations were among those that responded to the fire.
