An approach to women empowerment and the development of an equal society should start by uplifting the self-esteem of female learners and ensuring they continue learning.
Karabo Digasho, commonly known as KaraboThePoet, with Emjay Molea and Thembisa High School teacher Ande Mgoboza came up with an initiative that aims to enable a girl child to enjoy learning regardless of her background by donating sanitary pads and cosmetic products to the Grade Nine and 12 learners of Thembisa High.
According to Mgoboza, a lack of access to sanitary products restricts learners.

She said the donations aim to restore the dignity of those who struggle to access them.
“Keeping a girl child in school should not be expensive, instead, it should be affordable. Learners should not miss a single day of teaching and learning because they cannot afford sanitary towels,” Mgoboza added.
The duo believes the pandemic has worsened the situation, with learners feeling the consequences.
“With the implementation of the initiative, we aim to bring out the feminine power of our learners,” Digasho said.
