Know Your Local Organisation: SPCA Kempton Park

Know Your Local NGOs is a new initiative of Express that attempts to bridge the gap that might exist between the community, corporates and local organisations.

Know Your Local NGOs is a new initiative of Express that attempts to bridge the gap that might exist between the community, corporates and local organisations.

The aim is to make local organisations that continuously make a difference in the community known to the public.
These organisations include non-profit organisations (NPOs), non-government organisations (NGOs), and non-profit companies (NPCs).

This week, we feature SPCA Kempton Park established in October 1985.

• What does the organisation do?
“We rescue and rehome animals as well as educate the community. Our services include inspection of grooming parlours, pet stores, circuses, farms and homes, as well as the investigation of cruelty complaints,” said Kira Sparrow, manager at SPCA Kempton Park.

• Who is the organisation targeted to and who does it aim to help?
“Our objective is to serve and protect all animals, to uplift their welfare and to ensure their protection. We rescue and rehome abandoned and surrendered animals. We educate and support the community in caring for their animals.”

• What are some of the ongoing operations/campaigns/outreach programmes?
“We run outreach programmes in our local communities and educational programmes at schools and corporates to educate our community about animal welfare.”

• What are the prominent challenges faced by your organisation?
“Our organisation runs solely off the generosity of our community, we have no funding from the government or the National Lottery. We have an average of 100 animals in our care at any time, these animals need food, medical attention and a safe shelter,” explained Sparrow.

• What are the organisation’s needs?
Funding for daily operations, food for the animals, payment of vet’s bills and petrol to transport the animals to and from the vet. Funds are also needed for collections, investigations and maintenance of kennels.

• How has Covid-19, regulations and restrictions and lockdown impacted the organisation?
“We have not been able to do any fund-raising events and many people are surrendering their animals due to loss of income,” shared Sparrow.

• How can people help?
“There are lots of ways people can help us. You can sponsor a kennel, donate dog or cat food, tidy out your cupboards and bring us the clothes, toys and household goodies you are no longer using so we can sell them in our charity shop. You can sponsor a staff member a new uniform or some paper for our printer. You could get a group of friends, your school or your company involved and assist us with awareness and fundraising.”
