WATCH: Baby safe brings hope

Life Link Pregnancy Crisis Centre has been providing positive alternatives to abortion and now the organisation will provide positive alternatives to abandonment.

Life Link Pregnancy Crisis Centre has been providing positive alternatives to abortion and now the organisation will provide positive alternatives to abandonment. This will be done through the organisation’s new initiative, Jeremiah’s Hope.

“We are proud to officially launch our fully operational baby safe which we call Jeremiah’s Hope,” said Sharon Rushton, founder and director of Life Link.

“The idea of a baby safe was birthed in 2016 and now, four years later, it is a reality.”

Life Link has been operating for 19 years and was previously situated at the Kempton Park Child Welfare before moving to their new property at 10 Du Plessis Avenue, Kempton Park Extension Two, last year in September.

Rushton, who is passionate about helping mothers and babies, said through Jeremiah’s Hope, they are providing hope and a future for unwanted babies.

“Instead of abandoning babies at fields, dustbins and other unsafe places, we are providing a safer option for mothers who feel they are unable to care for their babies,” shared Rushton.

“Rather bring the baby here where they will be safe.”

Jeremiah’s Hope is only a few weeks old but it is operational 24 hours.

“If a mom decides that she can’t look after her baby and she feels like abandonment is her only option, she can open the baby safe and place the baby inside,” explained Rushton.

“As she closes the door, the baby safe will automatically lock to prevent someone from removing the baby from outside. The pressure mat inside the baby safe will set off an alarm that will notify SSS Security and other key role players. They will to attend to the baby.”

Rushton told Express that with the help of the security company, the baby is removed within minutes.

“We are very grateful and blessed that we are working with SSS Security as our backup and with the other key role players so that the baby is removed so quickly. I will also be notified through the alarm system and will be there as soon as I can. If the baby is in need of medical attention they will be taken to hospital where he/she will be taken care of.

“If the baby is deemed healthy, we take him/her into our organisation and a medical report will be done and a file will be opened; the case will then be handed to our social worker and the baby will be released for adoption once the legal process has been handled.

“We are also fortunate that Arwyp Hospital will assist with the Form 7 medical checkup for us. We are also working closely with the police with regard to the abandoned babies.

“This is another way we want to help mothers and babies in need”

The organisation also offers counselling for woman and mothers every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 9am and 1pm.
