Birchleigh home invasion turns to murder

The man and other occupants of the dwelling were approached by three suspects who tied them up with cable ties.

What started out as an armed robbery in Springbok Avenue on Tuesday evening, resulted in a murder scene after two men were tied up by three armed attackers.

Norkem Park SAPS members responded to the scene at 8pm when a 31-year-old man was found dead from a gunshot wound.

The man was living in a Wendy house in the backyard of the Birchleigh property.

The man and other occupants of the dwelling was accosted by the suspects who tied them up with cable ties.

According to Sgt Johanna Madiga, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, the man managed to free himself and tried to fight off the suspects.

He was shot and was later declared dead on the scene.

“The owner of the main house on the property appeared outside and fired two shots in the suspects’ direction. The suspects fled on foot,” Madiga stated.

“They took a plasma screen television and three cellphones. A charge of armed robbery and murder is being investigated.”
