Suspect dead after shootout with Flying Squad on Pretoria Road

"The female driver from the Polo managed to escape and take cover in a ditch."

A suspect was shot and killed during a shootout with Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) on August 12 at around 8.10pm on Pretoria Road, Kempton Park.

A second suspect involved in the incident, who fled the scene during the shootout, has not yet been traced.

BFS communications officers, Warrant Officer Grant Giblin said officers noticed a commotion from a white Volkswagen Polo parked in oncoming traffic waiting for the traffic light.

“A suspect jumped into the front passenger seat while another opened the driver’s door, forcing the woman behind the steering wheel, to move over.

“Immediately recognising potential foul play the two officers stopped their vehicle and jumped out to intervene.

“Noticing the police vehicle the suspect on the driver’s side exited the car, and fired shots at the officers followed by a second suspect also exiting and shooting at the officers.

“The officers retaliated and an exchange of gun fire ensued as the two suspects ran into the field.

“In the meantime, the female driver from the Polo managed to escape and take cover in a ditch. The one suspect was shot during the shootout. Paramedics were contacted. Police also receoved a 9mm pistol with the serial numbers filed off.

“Paramedics transported the suspect to hospital but he was later declared deceased.

“The officers and the victim of the attempted hijacking were unharmed in the incident.”

At the time of publishing the second suspect has not been traced, investigations continue.
