Birch Acres car chase leads to arrest of robbery suspect

"The suspect was arrested and a firearm containing ammunition recovered."

On Thursday afternoon around 4pm, Benoni Flying Squad, in collaboration with Norkem Park police, joined a chase for hijackers on the run in Birch Acres.

A look-out report was received that aimed at a gold Mercedes-Benz, alleged to have been the getaway vehicle.

“An alert informed that Const Thabiso Mabaso traced down a suspect vehicle with one occupant in Isimuku Street,” said Benoni Flying Squad communications officer WO Grant Giblin.

“A chase ensued around the area, with the suspect refusing to stop. He lost control and collided with another vehicle on Sim Street.

“The suspect was arrested and a firearm containing ammunition recovered.

“Upon investigation, the serial number was tested and results showed it was a stolen weapon in a Kempton Park case from June 2018.”
