DA petitions about incessant power outages to be discussed in Parliament

The DA would like to assure residents that the petitions they sign are not in vain.

The DA has submitted three petitions on the incessant power outages in Ekurhuleni to Parliament for debate on Tuesday, June 30.

This follows the petitions being discussed at the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

According to Mike Waters, MP and DA constituency head Kempvale, the petitions submitted include one from the residents of Boksburg and Germiston in the City of Ekurhuleni, calling on the assembly to investigate the numerous power outages, and another relating to the Glen Marais substation fire last year.

The DA would like to assure residents that the petitions they sign are not in vain.

“As a result, the ANC-led City of Ekurhuleni has been subpoenaed to Parliament to account,” said Waters.

The DA has recently launched the “Take back your Power” campaign across the City.

In the meantime, an urgent motion regarding these outages, brought by the DA, was rejected by the metro council.

The urgent motion was presented to council by the DA as rampant power outages continue to plague the City, which have left many communities in darkness for days on end, said Ald Phillip de Lange, DA leader in Ekurhuleni .

“In the motion, we called for the City to take a serious stance and address this matter. The urgent motion wasn’t merely a wish list but set out recommendations, which would force council to be held accountable, if adopted.

“In the recommendations, we called for an AD HOC committee, made up of all political parties, to investigate the true state of electrical infrastructure across Ekurhuleni. We also called for decisive action on illegal connections,” said De Lange.

“This motion highlighted just how serious power outages have become in Ekurhuleni, with over 1 500 unplanned outages a day.”
