Miss Thembisa runs online anti-bullying campaign for learners

Bullying has a negative impact on victims and some people only realise its impact during their adult years.

Reigning Miss Thembisa Mohau Matinketsa runs an anti-bullying project known as Beyond the Browbeat, which aims to raise awareness about bullying in schools.

According to Matinketsa, as a result of the lockdown, the campaign is taking place digitally via Instagram and WhatsApp. She aims to engage with school learners post lockdown.

“I started this project because of my own experiences in primary school as well as the shocking news we see about bullying in our country. Bullying is a conversation we should be having with children because it contributes to their learning environment. If we really want to work towards achieving a sustainable development goal, we have to ensure that we eradicate any form of hindrance that comes our way and bullying is one of them,”she said.

Bullying has a negative impact on victims and some people only realise its impact during their adult years. It causes social anxiety, lack of confidence, self-isolation, a decrease in academic achievement or even self-harm.

“As a result, those who are affected are not able to reach their full potential at school and other aspects of their lives. I encourage people to engage with their siblings about bullying. Their siblings are either bullies, victims or bystanders and each one of them can actually end bullying if they are given guidance.

“The platforms I am using allow people to learn about bullying and how they can help children fight it. I have already had my first online workshop, which went well and I will be looking forward to more engagements and creating safe spaces in schools,” said Matinketsa.
