Water problems in Bonaero Park remain bone of contention

Ward councillor says these residents did not have water pressure problems in the past and are ready to take the issue further.

The City of Ekurhuleni is investigating the low to no water pressure in Bonaero Park, after almost a month of complaints.

According to Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the City, residents and businesses in Bonaero Park, Brentwood Park and Pomona are affected.

“We are aware of the water supply interruption affecting certain areas. The experienced low water pressure to no water in parts of these areas during peak hours from 8am to noon daily is receiving attention,” said Gadebe.

“Technicians are attending to the problem. To this end, and as part of the investigations to determine the root cause, loggers and flow meters have been strategically installed within the water supply network to determine where the system is losing pressure.

“The analysis of the logging will be completed on or before June 23,” said Gadebe.

Ward councillor André du Plessis also received an email from the water department, saying these areas do not have adequate water supply during peak demand period.
It was advised that they install the same system as at the retirement village on Kirshner Road.

Du Plessis begged to differ. He said these residents did not have water pressure problems in the past and were ready to take the issue further.

“I am of the opinion that it is inadequate and aging council infrastructure that is the main cause of these recent water pressure problems,” said du Plessis.

“Despite a few additional developments to neighbouring areas, there has been absolutely no upgrades to these water infrastructures within the past 20 years since I have been the councillor.

“Furthermore, I find it unreasonable for the council to expect these residents to incur major expenses, plus the inconvenience of inadequate space for these suggested facilities, due to the fact that the metro has not done its homework.

“Interestingly enough, at a public meeting in Bonaero Park not so long ago the MMC and her head of department gave the residents of Bonaero Park an undertaking that the failing sewer system, as well as the failing water supply, will be addressed and resolved.

“This is after all the responsibility of the metro,” said du Plessis.

“It is the responsibility of the metro to provide sufficient water. These residents are paying for this service. Most of these complexes have been in existence for many years without any problems with water pressure and supply.”
