Arwyp responds to allegations of PPE negligence

One healthcare worker and one cleaner tested positive for the virus

Arwyp Medical Centre is following strict guidelines regarding the issuing of PPEs to all its staff.

“We have spent numerous hours interviewing various staff members, patients and viewed historic CCTV footage, and have not found any evidence showing that we are not following these guidelines,” said Ansie Willemse, relationship manager at the centre.

She responded to accusations made in a television report that staff had to work without protective gear.

Gauteng MEC for health Dr Bandile Masuku also visited Arwyp on Friday.

Willemse said in a statement issued on Monday: “We have always been and still are fully committed to our patients’ health and safety. To this end and since the inception of the pandemic in South Africa, we have taken the necessary steps ensuring that we are both prepared and ready to assist and treat Covid patients.

“Since the onset of this pandemic we have supplied our staff with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) guideline PPEs, and in no instances whatsoever have we stepped away from these guidelines.

“However, it would be to everyone’s interest and benefit if specific details could be given to us in terms of staff not being given the correct PPEs, so that we can ensure that this is done,” said Willemse.

According to her only one staff member formally complained about the PPEs and after investigating, they could not find any evidence to substantiate the allegations.

“Notwithstanding this, we again checked all of our CCTV footage and communicated to our staff but were unable to find any instances where the correct PPEs were not worn.”

According to her one healthcare worker and one cleaner, of which one did not have any contact with a Covid-19 patient, tested positive for Covid-19 and had been self-isolating in accordance to recommended guidelines.

“Once again we would like to give our firm commitment that our patient health and safety is our biggest priority.”
