Hoërskool Birchleigh flooded with applications for Grade 8 learners
Probably only about 100 000 spaces remaining in Gauteng schools.
After two weeks of online learner registrations for Grade 1 and 8 learners, 35 schools had already received over 1 000 applications, which is far above their capacity.
One such school is Hoërskool Birchleigh in Kempton Park.
According to the department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, online applications received stood at nearly 450 000 on Tuesday.
He said there were probably only about 100 000 spaces remaining in Gauteng schools.
“Parents need not panic as departmental technicians are working tirelessly on rectifying the WA4 reference numbers received by some parents who reside closer to schools, instead of them receiving WA1. No parent will be disadvantaged.”
Parents are reminded to submit necessary documents to schools within seven working days after applying. Schools must not compel parents to fill in administrative forms or require some supporting documents before accepting their documents, during the application period.
Admissions applications will close at midnight on July 22 and placement will commence on August 30 until September 30.
Parents must visit www.gdeadmissions.gov.za to apply.
Any parent who lacks access to the internet or requires face-to-face assistance should visit a walk-in centre, all public ordinary schools and identified community libraries for applications.

Parents that have Grade R learners must apply online for Grade 1.
