Flying squad nails ‘armed’ robbers in Glen Marais

Inside the vehicle, two pistols were recovered, which turned out to be toy firearms.

Five suspects allegedly involved in an armed robbery in Daveyton were cornered in Glen Marais by Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) members on Saturday morning.

Spokesperson for the squad WO Grant Giblin said Const Thabiso Mabaso and Const Zacky Chauke received a lookout notification over the police radio for a silver/grey Nissan X-Trail around 10am.

The vehicle with five occupants had allegedly committed an armed robbery at Mavusana Place on Ramza Street, Daveyton.

“While on patrol, the officers spotted the vehicle travelling on Great North Road from Benoni to Kempton Park,” said Giblin.

The constables managed to pull the vehicle over at the corner Veld and Braambos streets. The occupants were instructed to get out and a thorough search was conducted.

Inside the vehicle, two pistols were recovered, which turned out to be toy firearms, and an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes and airtime vouchers.

The men were arrested, all exhibits confiscated and the X-Trail impounded.
