Kempton SPCA volunteer dies after car accident on the R21

The animal reproduction student joined the SPCA team in 2011 when she was still in high school

SATURDAYS at Kempton Park SPCA will never be the same after the death of one its young volunteers, who was killed in a car accident last week.

Edenvale resident Lauren Wilson (22) was involved in an accident on Wednesday afternoon last week on the R21 at the Edenvale/Boksburg split. She was coming from varsity in Pretoria.

She was taken to hospital by paramedics but died the following morning.

“Lauren was a dear team member of Kempton Park SPCA. She started volunteering at the society as a young high school learner in 2011 and grew into a beautiful young lady,” Kira Sparrow, Kempton Park SPCA manager, said.

Wilson assisted mainly on Saturday mornings and on the odd day during the week when the need arose. She was always happy to be at the SPCA and would avail herself gladly when the organisation asked her.

According to Sparrow, she was very knowledgeable with animals and was studying animal reproduction. She was also a jovial being, sensitive and very compassionate about animal welfare.

“Lauren was a colourful person, especially her sense of dress, always in bright coloured knitted jerseys (made with love by her grandmother) and nails to match. She was forever singing and making a huge fuss over the animals at the branch. She adored her family and place here at our SPCA. She is sorely missed. Saturdays will never be the same.”

Wilson would have celebrated her 23rd birthday on December 14.
