Candle light prayer for Van Riebeeck hijack victim tonight

The hijacking took place as Tom Zeeman arrived home with his wife (61) and daughter (31)

THREE men are on the run after shooting and killing a 64-year-old grandfather in Van Riebeeck Park on Sunday night, before driving off with his white two-door Mercedes Benz.

The hijacking took place as Tom Zeeman arrived home with his wife (61) and daughter (31) at their home on Soutpansberg Drive just after 7.30pm.

A silent march and candle light prayer will be held for Zeeman tonight at his home from 6.30pm.

Residents are requested to bring flowers and a candle and are urged to lay flowers and/or cards in front of the home during the day.

A case of murder and hijacking is being investigated by Norkem Park SAPS.

According to Super Cops reaction officer, Steven Sindane, who was the first on the scene, one of their clients heard gunshots and called them for help.

Sindane responded to the call and went to investigate where the shots came from. He found Zeeman lying on the ground.

“His wife opened the gate and after driving into the yard, she tried to get the dogs back inside to lock the gate. She was pushed to the side by three armed men as they ran into the yard,” explained Sindane.

“They manhandled her and demanded her jewellery. They then went on to pull her husband out of the car.”

Sindane said the three suspects struggled to reverse the car out of the yard. There was an exchange of words between them and the victim which his wife could not hear.

Before she knew it, the suspects managed to reverse the car. They fired at her husband while driving off.

An ambulance was called and Zeeman was rushed to The Glynnwood Lifecare Hospital where he underwent surgery. He died shortly before midnight.

Sindane said five cartridges were recovered on the scene.

Norkem Park SAPS spokesman, Capt Lesibana Molokomme, said two bullets had hit Zeeman in his upper body but his wife and daughter were unharmed.

Ward councillor Gideon van Zyl has sent condolences to the family.

The stolen white CLC 200 Mercedes Benz, with registration number DX 78 BN GP, has not been recovered.

Norkem Park SAPS requests anyone with information about the hijacked car or three suspects to call 011-39-11814/5 or 08600 10111.
