WATCH: St George’s Home hosts open day

Pennypinchers, suppliers of building material, also presented some donations to the home including doors and boards for cupboards

ST George’s kids displayed their life-saving skills during the home’s Open Day on May 26.

The Kempton children’s home hosted its open day where the police and other stakeholders were invited to join them.

A few of the teens gave a presentation on the valuable life-saving skills they were taught by representatives of St John’s, an international charity organisation that provides emergency care, ambulance transportation and home-based care.

St John’s has been working with St George’s for 10 years, providing voluntary training on first aid and CPR to the children living at the home. Three of St John’s representatives who work with the children were awarded certificates of appreciation for the time they give to the home.

“We would also like to introduce home economics to the kids and teach them skills such as cooking and embroidery,” St John’s Louis Fourie said.

Two of the kids have already graduated in home-based care training.

Pennypinchers, suppliers of building material, also presented some donations to the home including doors and boards for cupboards.

St George’s is part of COACH, a charity organisation that comprises three children’s homes: St George’s, St Joseph’s and St Nicolas’. The homes have since transformed from being just providers of custodial care to becoming therapeutic, life space intervention centres where children are given basic and essential life skills. Unfortunately, due to tough economic times, St Joseph’s was closed down.
