MES and OR Tambo celebrate Madiba Day by giving back

104 pairs of shoes and gift bags were handed out on the day

THE staff of OR Tambo International Airport set out to wash windows and sweep the floors, as well as to hand out food, blankets, shoes and more, at MES Kempton Park, for Mandela Day, that forms part of their winter warmer campaign, on July 18.

“It is important to us to host the homeless, as well as children, because they are a big part of the community and as we are in the fortunate position to give back to the community, we give what we can,” said general manager of OR Tambo, Bongiwe Pityi.

The staff handed out 104 pairs of shoes to the adults who are regular tenants at MES, and gift bags containing a blanket and sweets to the children.

OR Tambo also provided the homeless with a warm meal of curry and rice.

The Kempton Park SAPS and Metro Police also helped the staff to wash windows and clean up the MES house.

“We must not forget the life lessons that Madiba taught us, and the one that we have done here is: do to others what you want done upon yourself, we are doing that by supporting our local communities,” said Pityi.
