EMPD and Cochrane donate blankets and Bibles to Tembisa residents

Over and above the blankets and Bibles, soup and rolls were served

THE residents of Freedom Square, in Tembisa, were blessed with blankets and Bibles for the 67 Minutes for Mandela Day campaign.

In honouring Mandela’s legacy, the EMPD and Cochrane Steel joined hands and made the donation to the residents on July 14.

Over and above the blankets and Bibles, soup and rolls were served to the most deprived members of this community.

“The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s Chaplaincy, Social Crime Prevention and By-Laws Unit commanders, in collaboration with the community leader in Ward Two, Jackson Mokomele, identified the very needy and facilitated the smooth distribution of 90 blankets and 60 Bibles (in various official languages), as well as dishing out hot cups of soup and bread rolls to dozens of the residents on that wintry morning,” Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, said in a statement.

Pamphlets educating the residents on the dangers of substance abuse – especially Nyaope – were distributed to the Freedom Square community by the EMPD.

The team from Cochrane Steel, the company responsible for the donations, was led by its security chief, Bou Bacar, who promised that his company would continually identify destitute children in the informal settlements of Ekurhuleni, with the objective of ensuring that they don’t miss out on basic education and that groceries are provided to them on a regular basis.
