TWO robbers are on the run while their accomplice is in hospital under police guard following an attempted robbery and shooting at Festival Mall on Thursday afternoon.

Kempton Park SAPS spokesman, Capt Jethro Mtshali, said the robber had been shot by the victim in the mall’s parking lot.

“It is believed that the driver of the bakkie had just withdrawn a large amount of money at a bank. He gave the money to a colleague who went in a different direction but the suspects didn’t know this and most probably continued to follow him,” explained Mtshali.

Mtshali said as the victim tried driving off in his vehicle the three robbers appeared and smashed his passenger window with what appeared to be a hammer. The victim continued driving and stopped the vehicle just outside Home Corp.

He retrieved his gun and shot one of the robbers in the shoulder. His accomplices heard the shot and fled the scene towards the railway line.

Mtshali said it was not known whether the robbers had a getaway vehicle or whether they came on foot.

The robber is in hospital under police guard and is being treated for gunshot injuries to the shoulder.

A case of attempted robbery has been opened and police are investigating.
