Fireworks: Owner finds injured dog trapped in fence

Her owners only found her after midnight where she got stuck in a fence, injuring herself

A five-year-old Dachshund is lucky to be alive today after she got stuck in a fence trying to escape from fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

Lucky for her, Buffy’s owners found her four blocks from their Birchleigh home and immediately took her to a vet where her wounds were stitched.

According to her owner, Heidi Maschke, they gave Buffy a sedative they got from a vet before they left. However, this was not enough to calm her down.

Buffy escaped through two sets of burglar bars and a palisade fence.

When they returned at around 11pm, they realised their pet was gone. They informed MML Security and their neighbourhood watch. Neighbours joined them in their search for Buffy.

They only found her after midnight where she got stuck in a fence, injuring herself. Maschke freed Buffy and immediately took her to Kempton Park Animal Hospital. The vet’s bill amounted to R3 500.

Buffy is doing fine and a drain was removed from her wounds on Tuesday.

“I want to share my story just to show people what fireworks can do to animals. We were lucky to find her alive.

“I want to thank all the people who helped looking for her, as well as the vet who saved her,” Maschke said.

In an unrelated incident on December 23 a resident came upon a shocking scene on Pongolariver Drive where a dead dog was hanging on a fence.

Veronica van Greunen said she drove past the house and noticed the animal, looking like a German Shepherd, hanging on the fence. It was already dead. She said the owners were not at home and it looked as if it had tried to escape from the yard when it was caught on the fence.

She posted the photograph on the Facebook page KEMPTONPARKERS.”Daarom HAAT ek vakansiedae! Dis oor sulke goed! Ek raak MAL! Hier is ek nou alweer snot en trane! Ag Here!” Crystal Strydom commented on the post.

Ness Mac Wrote: “Veronica, thank you for posting this and making people see what can happen! This image breaks my heart! But needed to be posted, thumbs up for trying to help the woofie and for ACTUALLY stopping! I take my hat off to you!”
