Smash and grabs: These are the hot spots in Kempton Park

Female police officers from Kempton SAPS will distribute pamphlets with safety tips for women on how to prevent being victims of smash and grab today

PAMPHLETS with safety tips for women about smash and grabs will be handed out today by Kempton Park SAPS female police officers at various smash and grab hot spots in Kempton.

This comes after incidents of smash and grab have been on the rise and the station commander of Kempton Park SAPS, Brig Johannes Marx, has issued a warning to the community to stay extra vigilant.

“The station commander has established a task team wearing civilian clothing and increased more visibility by deploying crime prevention members to be on the lookout for these incidents,” Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesman for Kempton Park SAPS, said.

The hot spot areas for this crime have been identified as the R21 and R23 off-ramps, CR Swart Drive and Pretoria Road, Vlei Street, Voortrekker Road, Dann Road, Monument Road, Atlas Road, Great North Road and Elgin Road.

“Seeing as victims of smash and grab crimes are mostly women, in commemoration of Women’s Month, the female officers at the station will be at these hot spots from early Friday morning until about 1pm to distribute pamphlets with tips on how to prevent being victims of crime.”

Police have on several occasions given out tips to prevent smash and grab crimes, including that drivers should always keep their valuables in the boot of their vehicles or places where their valuables are not visible to criminals. Items such as cell phones, laptops, and iPads are usually carelessly put on passenger seats or back seats of the car where they are visible.
