Kwasa-Kwasa loses on penalties

Genius FC beat Kwasa-Kwasa FC 6-5 on penalties to clinch the Tembisa Masters Social League (TMSL) Cup in a fast-flowing game played at the Mehlaring Stadium on Sunday.

Both teams consist of former professional players who used to entertain fans across the country during their heydays. Former Tembisa Classic and Mamelodi Sundowns’ dribbling wizard, Tumelo “Ryder” Mofokeng, was a marvel to watch in the middle of the park. He was at his best and was distributing defence-splitting passes to his strikers, but his strikers were tightly marked by their opponents.

Genius FC drew first blood when former Supersport United and Orlando Pirates midfielder, Gerald Sibeko, converted a penalty kick after one of his strikers was brought down in the penalty area. It was 1-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Kwasa-Kwasa FC started the game like wounded tigers, forcing their opponents to play with their backs against the wall. Sensing defeat, they changed their pattern from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 and added more pressure to their opponents. They started to penetrate the defence through the wings.

It came as no surprise when Mofokeng released the ball to the left flank before his teammate curled a good looking cross into the danger area, and Thato Maleka connected with a volley that beat the ‘keeper.

The game was decided on penalties after it ended 1-1. Genius FC managed to score all five penalties, while Victor Nhlapo missed for Kwasa-Kwasa.
