Robbers flee with R45 000

The family of Mrs Mkwayi Makhozasana was robbed of R45 000 at gunpoint by three men in Ivory Park, extension 2

The family of Mrs Mkwayi Makhozasana was robbed of R45 000 at gunpoint by three men in Ivory Park, extension 2, on Saturday last week.

The robbery occurred in front of Mrs Makhozasana’s house, after they had returned from drawing money from a bank in Midrand.

“I think we were followed by the three men from Midrand. After we withdrew the money, we didn’t wasted time shopping. We only bought some food and then went straight to our car. We drove to our house in Ivory Park and parked at the gate. While still inside the car, a white Mercedes Benz stopped near us and two men exited the vehicle. They came straight to me and opened the left door of my car and demanded my handbag. The man had a firearm, which he had pointed at me,” she said.

Mrs Makhozasana refused to let go of her handbag and fought with her attacker.

“He beat me with the firearm on my arm, but I didn’t let him take my handbag. I don’t recall how my handbag was eventually taken as it happened so quickly. I just saw the two men going back to their car carrying my handbag. Their driver sat waiting inside the Mercedes Benz,” she added.

The handbag contained ID books, drivers licences, bank cards, cellular phones and the money which had been withdrawn. Mrs Makhozasana’s four-year-old daughter was also inside the vehicle when the robbery occurred.

According to Mrs Makhozasana, the money was intended for her small business, which she was in the process of starting.

“I wanted to open small business, selling fish and chips among other items. I had purchased two big fridges and was looking forward to doing business,” she said.

The Ivory Park SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, confirmed that a case of armed robbery was opened.

The Mercedes Benz was later recovered by the Chloorkop SAPS, parked at one of the houses in Esther Park.
