Home Affairs brings service to the people

Speaking to the media at the Madelakufa Informal Settlement, the assistant director of operations Mr Malose Ramphela, said they have been running an outreach programme where they go out to service members of the community.

In an effort to help local communities to apply for birth certificates and identity documents, the department of home affairs visited Tembisa on Friday and Saturday last week.

Speaking to the media at the Madelakufa Informal Settlement, the assistant director of operations Mr Malose Ramphela, said they have been running an outreach programme where they go out to service members of the community.

He said the main problem they encounter is foreigners who try to apply for identity documents as South Africans.

“We have a panel that interviews those who come without birth certificates to make sure they are South African citizens. I would also like to make a call to foreigners who take chances that they will never succeed,” he said.

He added that foreigners who would like to apply for an identity document must do that through immigration.

Mr Ramphela said that apart from servicing Ekurhuleni, they also service Tshwane, the West Rand and Sedibeng.

Kgontse Pieterson, 17 year old applying for an ID for the very first time, said he is happy he would be able to vote in the 2014 general elections.

“I am going to vote next yearand I believe my vote will make a difference,” he said.
