Pupils compete in China

Two students from Tembisa participated in the Chinese Language Proficiency Competition in China last week.

Motswedi Modiba and Tadiwa Chirima, who are all in Grade 11 at the Pretoria Chinese School, started competing with other schools locally. After being identified as the best, they went to China where they represented South Africa against 68 other countries.

The competition included speaking and writing in Mandarin. The team was placed thirdand each also won an extra prize. Motswedi was chosen as the most talented pupil, while Tadiwa also received an award for her personality. Both were awarded trophies.

The school organised a function to congratulate them on Thursday last week.

Modiba will further her studies at the University of Unang when she finishes matric.

Leuba Modiba, Motswedi’s father, said he is proud of his daughter’s achievement.

“This is the first time South Africa has won in this competition. We are proud as a nation to have our names recorded on Chinese history,” said Modiba.

He added that he is also proud his daughter is one of the first in the country to have mastered the Chinese language.

When asked if her daughter speaks Mandarin at home, he said she sometimes does when speaking to her siblings.

“Her siblings attend the same schooland they are also fluent in Mandarin,” he added.
