School rewards top achievers

For two consecutive years, Boitumelong Secondary School has held its Academic Achievers awards to inspire pupils and celebrate their achievements.

The top 12 achievers from Boitumelong, who passed with outstanding results this year are, Bongani Mabuso and Sewola Motlhabeng (grade 12), Rufus Seopa and Katlego Matlanke (grade 11), Mokola Mogosi and Lebogang Mohoto (grade 10), Kemisetso Dimpe, Happy Sisanga and Neo Kekana (grade 9) and Nokhanya Ncwane, Lerato Lekoko and Cathrina Chuma (grade 8).

The top achievers were awarded certificates and gift packs, which included a calculator, mug, pens and vouchers.

The 115 pupils who showed an improvement in their marks were awarded certificates.

Speaking during the handing over of the certificates, deputy principal Sesi Makena said the ceremony assists the school in improving pupils’ performance, specifically in mathematics and English.

“Our aim is to highlight positive role models who will serve as an inspiration to others. Our academic results are much better this year, thanks to this type of initiative. Pupils get inspired by others and start to work hard. I hope next year we will have more top academic achievers than this year. We are doing this to encourage our pupils to work hard. The best achievers deserve to be recognised,” she said.

Ms Makena said the school is aiming for a 100 percent matric pass rate this year.

The 2012 matric pass rate for the school was 68 percent.

Katlego Matlanke, a grade 11 pupil, achieved 81 percent for mathematics, 97 percent for science, 91 percent for life orientation, 94 percent for Sepedi and 83 percent for geography. She said her nomination has boosted her confidence, especially since the final examinations are looming.

“Motivation is precisely what we need. I urge my fellow pupils to work hard and believe in themselves. Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you have not planted,” she said.
