Metro Rail takes safety seriously

Metro Rail is trying to address resident's concerns regarding their safety on trains.

The area manager of Metro Rail, Naas Frere along with his team, visited a number of train stations in Tembisa to talk to commuters about the problems they are facing in the trains.

The Tembisan found the Metro Rail team in action at the Leralala Train Station on Wednesday morning. Commuters highlighted the issue of train safety, especially after a security company which used to guard commuters inside the train is no longer available.

Some commuters had a different view, saying the trains are safe, especially between 8am and 6pm.

Mr Frere said he had contacted the Protection Services Department to inform them about the problems.

“We encourage commuters to contact us if they see any crime committed on a train. They must exit the train at the next station and contact us. Railway security is always there at all train stations. Just contact themand they will contact the relevant authorities telephonically. They can also contact railway police,” he said.

Mr Frere said they also contacted the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) to help improve security.
