The project aims to support teachers and pupils through improve the quality of the results in mathematics and physical science in some primary and secondary schools in Tembisa.
The launch was attended by Ekurhuleni North District representative, Solly Ledwaba, AEL representative Steve Kgomo, school teachers, members of the School Governing Body (SGB) and pupils.
The provincial manager of Maths Centre, Christopher Nyangani, said the project aims to assist maths and physical science teachers and pupils with resources and text books in the eight selected schools in Tembisa. “We have provided the selected primary schools with mathematics kits, science kits, chalkboard instruments, calculators and a mobile science laboratory. We want to improve pupils’ performance by 20 percent year by year. We intend to work hand-in-hand with school officials and SGB members to monitor the pupils’ progression in the schools,” he said.
Nyangani added that it takes a village to raise a child and education can therefore not be left to teachers alone.
“Maths Centre will definitely enhance the performance of pupils, as well as the confidence of educators. Results have shown improvement in the schools we work in throughout the countryand we hope Tembisa will also make us proud,” he added.
He said they are also helping matric pupils get bursaries.
The primary schools selected for the programme are Phuthumane, Ipontshe, Kgahlamping and Gahlanso, while the secondary schools are Boitumelong, Phomolong, Tjiyane and Ingqayisivele.
Phuthumane Primary School principal, Shadrack Hlatswayo, said the project has improved the performance of their pupils, especially in mathematics.
“The workshops they arranged for our teachers has given them confidence in terms of how to approach the content. We are grateful for the resources they supplied to our school. We hope the will include the foundation phase in years to come. We noticed some changes in the performance of our pupils during their annual results,” he said.
A grade 7 pupil, Nokuthula Sibanyoni from Phuthumani Primary School, said she was excited to have Maths Centre in her school because they contributed a lot to her confidence in mathematics.
“I am extremely grateful for the resources provided by Maths Centre as they helped me pass maths with high marks,” she said.
Sibanyoni, who is said to be the best in mathematics, represented the Ekurhuleni North District at a mathematics olympiad.
