Hospital clears up dispute

The DA in Gauteng has condemned the actions of the Tembisa Hospital's management, which led to student doctors being locked out of their accommodation and forced to sleep on chairs inside the hospital.

The DA also called upon Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo to intervene in the on-going dispute between the intern doctors and hospital management.

DA MPL, Patricia Mokgohlwa, says the dispute started in September last year when student doctors were removed from their residence because it was found to be unsafe.

They have now been locked out of their temporary accommodation and, having been separated from their belongings, were recently forced to tend to patients in shorts and slippers.

She says the MEC must act to ensure the doctors are properly accommodated to give patients at the Tembisa hospital quality care and attention.

When asked what caused the lockout, the spokesperson of the Gauteng Department of Health’s Simon Zwane says the hospital entered into an agreement into a lease agreement with Midrand Village in August 2012, which ended on 30 September 2013.

“Doctors were informed accordingly before the lease expired. The renovation process was managed by the Special Projects Infrastructure from the MEC’s office,” said Zwane.

“The renovations at the residence are complete and the hospital is waiting for doctors to occupy the residence,” he said.
