Walk commemorates struggle icons

In what was a highly contested race, Lebogang Shange and Corli Swart emerged as the winners of the 21 kilometre Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Liberation Walk.

The event took place today at the OR Tambo International Airport Sports Grounds in Ekurhuleni.

The first place winners of the 10 kilometre walk were Lewis Molise and Marion Seldyn.

The 21 kilometre winners each won a cash prize of R15 000, while the 10 kilometre winners won R6 000 each.

Ten percent of their winnings will be donated to the primary beneficiary – the Ludeke Primary School, which is located in the Eastern Cape. The funds will go towards improving the infrastructure of the school where Oliver Tambo started his formal education at the age of seven.

Launched in 2011, the annual Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Liberation Walk commemorates the lives and values of anti-apartheid struggle icons Oliver and Adelaide Tambo, who believed in self-sacrifice and serving others.

Under the theme, Ten Thousand People United for Education, individuals from across the nation came together to take steps to advance the education of disadvantaged children identified by the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation. These included high profile public figures such as the Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and the Ekurhuleni Mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele.

“The Liberation Walk would not be successful if it had not been for the event’s partners and sponsors,” says Mavuso Msimang, the CEO of the Tambo Foundation.

“We would like to thank the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the City of Ekurhuleni and SAFM for their continued support.”

“We are looking forward to next year’s event which, judging by the success of this year’s Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Liberation Walk, will continue to be an outstanding occasion. We are truly proud as ACSA to have been involved in this initiative from the beginning, contributing to making our country a better place,” added Deborah Francis, ACSA’s acting spokesperson.

The entertainment line-up included Liquid Deep, Busiwa from Kalawa Jazzmee, Monde Dancers, Zues and radio personalities Azania Mosaka and TBO Touch.
