ATMs bombed

Two ABSA ATMs were bombed in the early hours of Tuesday morning last week at Ebony Park near Ivory Park.

A security officer patrolling the area claimed to have seen two men trying to break open the gate at a locked shopping complex.

He said the suspects were driving a black BMW with an unknown registration number. He also said the two men were armed with firearmsand he told his colleague to hide.

The guards then heard an explosion. When they went to investigate the sound, they saw eight men running to a white Jeep and a black BMW. The suspects then fled the scene.

According to Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, the Ivory Park SAPS spokesperson, a case of wilful damage to property is being investigated.

“An undisclosed amount of money was found at the scene. Some of the money had been covered with ink following the explosion. All the money was returned to ABSA Bank management,” said W/O Sekgobela.

A blasting cartridge was found at the scene and was handed over to the explosives unit.
