Elderly strive for success

The Busisiwe choir for the aged in Tembisa has put its name on the map after they won three trophies with their songs.

They group topped the other elderly choirs that participated during the Ekurhuleni Elderly Choral Competition, held in Vosloosrus recently.

In doing so, the group will compete at the provincial competitions to be held in Krugersdorp on October 1. With 70 choristers featured, the choir is rehearsing every Monday to Friday to boost their confidence.

Choral master Tshaledi Rakoma said they are striving for musical excellence through education, competitions, performance and community involvement.

“During our training programmes, we are taught the art of music, leadership, respect, honour and other elements of integrity. The elderly are not only great singers, they are also excellent ambassadors of good music. We are a committed group which never lets each other down. Singing helps our elderly reduce their stress levels as we pay attention to the music,” he said.

Rakoma added that he is excited to be conducting an active choir with a passion for singing. During competitions, choirs are given a prescribed song and should come up with two others, which includes a traditional song. Centre Manager for the elderly, Thandi Swakamisa, said it pleases her heart to see the choir striving for success against all odds.

“They do not have fancy clothing for competitions, or music instruments, but that does not stop them from showcasing their talents. I am happy for them and wish them luck in their next competitions,” she said.
