School girls get motivational talk

School girls from Tembisa and the surrounding areas were invited to a motivational talk last Tuesday.

The new ambassador for Spur Steak Ranches at Festival Mall Kempton Park, Thabiso Maupye, arranged for the 81 school girls to come to the restaurant to listen to motivational speakers.

The girls hailed from Tembisa High, Umqhele, ThutoKe-Matla, Bokamoso and the Tembisa West Secondary Schools. They were all accompanied by teachers from the various schools.

Maupye said he arranged the motivational talk for the girls to encouraged them to pursue their dreams and to be positive role models for other girls.

“Young girls in Tembisa get raped and abused on a daily basis. The motivational talk will help them break the silence of abuse, as they share their experiences with the speakers and other classmates. We want them to think about their future more than boyfriends. We want them to stop roaming around the street and malls,” he said.

One of the speakers, Mamello Mashu who is a nurse at Esangweni clinic, told the girls to be grateful for who they are and what they have. Mashu addressed the pupils about issues of women and child abuse, teenage pregnancy, family planning, abstinence and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). She inspired the girls with a story of her own life and how she had taken different paths to become successful as a women.

Meanwhile, Lawrence Moabelo from Tembisa, gave the girls career guidance and showed them various ways to apply for bursaries when completing matric.

Moabelo encouraged the school girls to look after their education, no matter what background they come from.

He said pupils should never be afraid to fail, to take risks or ask questions. “Do not be afraid to trip, fall and get back up. Whenever you feel like you need help with something, open your mouth and approach the right people who can give you what you need. Set goals and always be hungry to achieve them,” he said.
