Life imprisonment for rape

A 33-year-old Ivory Park man has been sentenced to life in prison after he was found guilty of raping his step-daughter.

According to the testimony in court, the mother of the 11-year-old child had left the child in the care of the step-father while she was at work.

The step-father called the child into his bedroom, commanded her to undress and raped her.

Family members became suspicious about the amount of time the child was spending in the bedroom with the step-father and began questioning the child about what was happening.

The child admitted to being raped. Family members contact the police and the step-father was arrested and detained at the Tembisa police cells.

Investigations revealed that he had been raping the child since 2008, while the mother was out working.

The man appeared in court on Tuesday last week and was found guilty. He was sentenced to life in prison.

“I think this sentence will serve as a deterrent to those men who take advantage of young girls and abuse them. We are responsible for the Tembisa Cluster Stations, Olifantsfontein, Ivory Park, Rabie Ridge, Sebenza, Edenvale, Norkem Park, Kempton Park and O. R Tambo. All rape and child abuse cases are investigated by our unit. We are currently trying to secure convictions for many suspects. I appeal to members of the community to report cases of family violence, child abuse and sexual assault to the nearest police station. If you are suspecting any abuse that you think is happening but not sure, you can still come to the police station we will help,” said the Head of the Tembisa Cluster for family violence, child protection and sexual offences, Captain Hlengani Shilenge.
