Smash and grabs: These are the hot spots in Kempton Park

Female police officers from Kempton SAPS will distribute pamphlets with safety tips for women on how to prevent being victims of smash and grab today

PAMPHLETS with safety tips for women about smash and grabs will be handed out today by Kempton Park SAPS female police officers at various smash and grab hot spots in Kempton.

This comes after incidents of smash and grab have been on the rise and the station commander of Kempton Park SAPS, Brig Johannes Marx, has issued a warning to the community to stay extra vigilant.

“The station commander has established a task team wearing civilian clothing and increased more visibility by deploying crime prevention members to be on the lookout for these incidents,” Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesman for Kempton Park SAPS, said.

The hot spot areas for this crime have been identified as the R21 and R23 off-ramps, CR Swart Drive and Pretoria Road, Vlei Street, Voortrekker Road, Dann Road, Monument Road, Atlas Road, Great North Road and Elgin Road.

“Seeing as victims of smash and grab crimes are mostly women, in commemoration of Women’s Month, the female officers at the station will be at these hot spots from early Friday morning until about 1pm to distribute pamphlets with tips on how to prevent being victims of crime.”

Police have on several occasions given out tips to prevent smash and grab crimes, including that drivers should always keep their valuables in the boot of their vehicles or places where their valuables are not visible to criminals. Items such as cell phones, laptops, and iPads are usually carelessly put on passenger seats or back seats of the car where they are visible.

  2. If they know about these hotspots why don’t the police petrol the place more often or be there to catch these people!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Friday 1 August at 10:30pm. Just picked my mother from airport. Pomona offramp. Attempted smash and grab. But grabed the mother fu…… And drove with him till he let go. Got nothing thank goodness! Carry protection or a dog or avoid stopping. Slow down and set off if no traffic!!!

  4. They should also focus on all the car-jammings at the shopping Centres. Shopping Centre in Elgin Rd by the Pub and De Wiekus Pharmacy parking lot as well. This is on going. They use gate remote to jam your car when you lock it so you think its locked but its not. takes them less than a minute to steal phone, bag, gps, laptops everything. Please make sure your car is locked before walking away.

  5. It would be more accurate to say the whole of Kempton Park is a hot spot as you named all the access roads to and from the city.

  6. Would be nice to get the info on those safety pamphlets, not all of us managed to get one this morning

  7. Okey handing out pamphlets gr8……so what are they doing to STOP the crime. Then kemptonpark police station doesn’t have a good repitation at all.Welldone justice!!!

  8. The problem with the offramp at R21/Voortrekker Road is that there is no lighting underneath the bridges of the R21. Please make a plan.

  9. allowing people to hang around intersections selling junk is the root of smash and grab, funny trafic police dont learn that in school

  10. I noticed all the police activity on Dann/Monument Rd this morning… They were standing around talking… but no pamphlet? Did not realise that they were actually there to warn us about smash and grab.

  11. I noticed them on cr start drive at the festival mall traffic lights. Same as one of the other comments, they were just standing around. No sign of any pamphlets whatsoever. Nice idea, poor execution it seems?

  12. Whats the use to hand out pamphlets? DO SOMETHING!!!!!! We as citizens pay taxes and levies and and and and…. for what? So you can give us feedback on the crime and tell us we should be EXTRA “vigilant”??? C’mon man!!! I am sick and tired! My wife was also a victim of smash and grab at the intersection of Dann and Pomona (next to the golf course). I will take two pamphlets then thank you………. Frustrating to say the least!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Well done SAPS I salute your efforts on behalf of not only women but the community!!

  14. Well done SAPS, You are seen to be doing your best, until the day you are needed, we see how you cannot take finger prints, we see how you expertly combat the crime rate, your investigation into the different crimes is to be admired, I witnessed a accident scence and the sergant in charge couldn’t cope.
