Church gives back to the community of Ivory Park

In its mission to support those in need, Al Noor has provided numerous food parcels to households, schools, and individuals living on the streets.

Since its establishment in 2020, Al Noor Islamic Center has become a vital support system for the Ivory Park community.

Every Tuesday, the center hosts a feeding scheme for those in need.

The challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the struggles of many families, prompting the center to increase its outreach efforts and continue giving back to the community.

In its mission to support those in need, Al Noor has provided numerous food parcels to households, schools, and individuals living on the streets, ensuring that no one goes hungry.

The center has also contributed school uniforms, including jerseys, bags, and shoes, to help keep learners in school.

On September 24, the center organised a special feeding scheme for the elders of Ivory Park, who gathered to celebrate Heritage Day.

Local ward councillors collaborated with the center to identify families in need and offer assistance.

The community has come to rely on Al Noor as a consistent source of food and support.

Abdirisak Ahmed, founder of Al Noor Islamic Center, shared his thoughts with The Thembisan.

“Giving back to the community is a value I learned from my church.

“The Islamic faith teaches us to pray and share what little we have; it’s not about status or fame, but about our beliefs.

“I see the challenges in our community and strive to help wherever I can.

“I often talk to those I assist about starting small businesses or finding ways to uplift themselves, as we know the area struggles with poverty.

“We need individuals who can take a stand and support themselves.”

Reflecting on the Heritage Day celebration, Ahmed expressed his joy in playing a role in the community.

“I’m excited to see elders of different cultures unite in celebration.

“They have been our pillars of strength throughout our lives. I aspire to provide them with more support, such as walking sticks and wheelchairs, to enhance their daily lives.”

Event organiser Julia Gololo praised the center’s commitment to the elderly.

“It’s heartening to see the center cater to our elders in times of need.

“Many rely on medication, and the food provided helps them take their meds.

“It was a pleasant surprise to have meals available; this gesture is greatly appreciated. We hope to see the center succeed in feeding even more community members.”

Al Noor Islamic Center is currently completing its new facility in the heart of Ivory Park Ext 10, which will further enhance its accessibility and support for the community.
