Kempton Park trio makes toys that bring smiles

The local men started making model cars eight months ago and have sold about 14 so far.

Siyanda Mbiyozo and Richard Maphakela bring smiles to Kempton Park residents with their handmade model cars.

The duo work with their friend, Khesha Julius, to create the unique toys, a journey they started eight months ago

Maphakela, who hails from Limpopo, said making model cars is a talent he has always known he had.

When he moved to Kempton Park, he met Mbiyozo, who had moved to the community from the Eastern Cape.

They joined forces with Khesha and soon realised they had immense talent together, so they started making the cars and selling them in the community.

“We have sold about 14 cars already. Siyanda has a job, and Khesha often does odd jobs in the area. When they are not around, I oversee everything,” said Maphakela.

They skillfully create the cars using scrap and recycled materials.

“We use almost any type of material to create the cars. We have used materials from old TVs, ironing boards, fridges, mattress springs and even plastic spoons,” said Maphakela.

He added that their clients are parents who buy these model cars for their children.

“It always gives me great joy to see children happily playing with their new toys after their parents have bought them a car.”

Maphakela said he hopes to pass his knowledge and skills on to the next generation one day.

“We are willing to teach children how to make these model cars. It’s important for them to know and learn skills they can do with their hands,” said Maphakela.
