Author of children books awarded for her contributions in the mental health of children,

Khwezi Books was recently recognised by African Honoree Authors Awards as a Legend in Africa.

Receiving this award is incredibly meaningful to Phumzile Mthembu as an author and advocate for children’s mental health.

It represents recognition of the importance of the work they are doing to support and uplift the mental well-being of children.

Phumzile Mthembu was awarded for her contributions to children’s mental health.

In the journey of establishing Khwezi Books, Mthembu has always had the family behind her who has been a constant source of support and encouragement.

Her mother, Nombulelo Mhlahlo, husband Siyabonga Mthembu and children play a vital role in her success.

They believed in her dreams even when they seemed far-fetched and provided the emotional and practical support I needed to pursue writing.

Her readers have held her by the hand in a unique way.

Their feedback, enthusiasm, and connection to the work she has done have fueled her passion and driven her to keep writing and advocating for important causes like children’s mental health.

Mthembu said receiving the nomination was overwhelming.“When I received the nomination, I was overwhelmed with a mix of emotions. Initially, there was a surge of excitement and joy.

“It felt incredibly validated to have my work recognised in such a significant way.

“Alongside the excitement, there was also a sense of disbelief and humility, as I reflected on the journey that led to this moment.

“In the first weeks, these emotions were quite intense. To manage them, I focused on staying grounded.

“I reminded myself of the reasons why I started writing and advocating for children’s mental health in the first place.

“I also leaned on my support system of family, friends, and mentors who helped me keep things in perspective. They also encouraged me to stay true to my mission,” she said.

“I wish to dedicate this award to the children I advocate for, as well as my mentor and business coach. To the children, you are the inspiration behind every word I write and every effort I make.

“Thinking of the importance of changing the narrative surrounding your mental health is the reason why I keep on advocating for your mental health and well-being,” she said.

She also thanked her mentor Tumelo Dichabe and business coach Pearl More for their guidance.

“Their guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support have been instrumental in my journey.

Phumzile Mthembu was awarded for her contributions to children’s mental health.

“Both have helped me navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and grow both personally and professionally,” she said.

Mthembu is working on establishing a bookstore and Khwezi Edu Literacy Center.

This centre will be a hub for learning and growth, providing children with access to books, educational resources, and programs designed to enhance their literacy skills. It’s a step towards fostering a love for reading and learning in a supportive environment.

“We are dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing space where children can feel secure and supported.

“This space will offer various activities and resources aimed at promoting mental health and well-being, ensuring that every child has a place where they can thrive.

“We will be organising a series of online events, including webinars, workshops, and interactive sessions.

“These events will focus on various aspects of children’s mental health and literacy, providing valuable insights and tools for parents, educators, and children alike.

“These initiatives reflect our commitment to making a positive impact on children’s lives through education, support, and community engagement,” said Mthembu.
