Spring has sprung at Melville Koppies
Flowering early ensures that their pollinators are not distracted by other flowers.
Despite no rain having fallen since autumn, many flowers are blooming at Melville Koppies.
Like many water-starved Johannesburg residents, they long ago made a plan for an alternative water source.
These early flowers all have something in common, they store food and water from the previous year in onion-like bulbs, woody roots or tubers like sweet potatoes.

Flowering early ensures that their pollinators are not distracted by other flowers, and if the veld has been burnt it lets the plants disperse their seeds in ground that hasn’t yet been overtaken by grasses. Come and see for yourself.

Melville Koppies is open every Sunday from 08:00 to 11:30.
Entry costs R90 for adults and R50 for persons under the age of 18.

Security is provided and safe parking is available opposite the entrance to Melville Koppies at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia.
All income is used for maintenance of the Koppies.
