Kempton Park women empowered through self-defence

The event empowered women with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves and others.

In celebration of Women’s Day, the Kempton Park CPF’s Izelle van den Berg recently hosted a self-defence class for the women of Kempton Park.

The event empowered women with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves and others.

Van den Berg said self-defence courses typically boost confidence, enabling individuals, especially women, to handle dangerous situations in their daily lives.

“Self-defence encourages faith in one’s abilities, empowering women to protect themselves and their loved ones. Self-defence also allows women to walk confidently, making them less of a target,” said Van den Berg.

The Fit Hot Women Club and NOVA Family Martial Arts and Fitness Centre were invited to the self-defence class, and the founders of both clubs, Monja Botha of Fit Hot Women and JD Du Plessis conducted the class and demonstrated a few techniques women could use if they find themselves in dangerous situations.

The Fit Hot Women Club is in Glen Marais and offers members rebounding, fitness, conditioning and boxing.

Botha founded the club because she wanted women to have a safe place to feel confident to work out.

She said she wanted to create a space for women to be among other women without judgement.

“I loved that so many women came and enjoyed the morning with us. I think that, as women, we tend to be oblivious.

“It’s not as though every day something happens, but in SA, with our statistics, it likely will happen to you.

“Giving women the weapon or empowerment to have a slight idea of what these people are doing out there.

“I am so proud to be a woman and celebrate Women’s Day with many women who are proud to be women,” Botha said.

Siné Visser said it was her first time at a self-defence class, and she believes more women must attend similar classes.

“Self-defence classes empower you and show you your strengths as a woman. There are so many moves you can do to protect yourself. All it takes is good practice with the correct instructions.

“I am sure that if something happens to me, I will be able to take that person down,” said Visser.
