Thembisa choir wins Battle of the Choirs

The Nostalgic Male Choir was crowned the battle champions after surpassing 12 other choirs.

The Nostalgic Male Choir conquered its competitors during the Battle of the Choirs held at Golden Walk Mall in Germiston on July 6.

The top 12 choirs participated after surviving various elimination rounds.

During the competition, the choir reached the final three.

After four hours of singing, the Nostalgic Male Choir were crowned the battle champions.

The Nostalgic Male Choir dominated the competition to be crowned the champions.

According to the choir members, their eagerness for success kept them going.

Sakhi Mangolo formed the Nostalgic Male Choir in 2000 when in high school.

During that time, he sang at school assemblies with his friends, motivating them to start the group.

Music was the passion that united them.

At the time, the group was called Humble Corner.

The choir is known for singing at funerals, gatherings, weddings and competitions.

They have entered singing competitions since 2004 and comprise Sakhi Mangolo, Gift Shabangu, Kabelo Rakumokoe, Bongani Mahlangu and five choristers.

Choir co-ordinator Gift Shabangu said the competition helped elevate their status as a group.

“We are well known in the area. Every time we finish singing, people ask for our details, CDs and more.

“When we joined the competition, we wanted to elevate our brand and be recognised for our talent. The battle helped fulfil what we aimed for when we joined.”

According to the choir conductor and founder, Mangolo, the group has faced several challenges, forcing him to take a stand as a leader and a brother.

“Despite our challenges, we always found a way and united to be stronger.”

The group is at work to release a new CD and has promised to create a masterpiece that will leave Thembisans eager for more.
