Bowls South Africa hosts successful tournament

The Nationals was eventually won by Wayne Roberts, current Protea from KZN who won R20 000 and will be sent to represent South Africa in the World Champion of Champions.

The Bowls South Africa (BSA) nationals were held between May 4 and 12.

The Johannesburg Bowls Association hosted the event with the assistance of Ekurhuleni Bowls.

More than 1 000 bowlers from across South Africa participated at the event.

Kempton Park Bowls and Community (KPBC) played host to the men’s pairs, open men’s singles and veteran men’s singles events of the competition.

“We were awarded the opportunity to be a host in the International Bowls for the Disabled World Cup and have been upgrading our club to being universally accessible,” said Mike Hunt, president of Kempton Park Bowling Club.

“After a year of hard work by our members fundraising, we were able to achieve this result.”

Hunt said they also managed to upgrade their greens and make them highly competitive. Since all this was taking place, it became a good choice for them to host the nationals at the club as well.

Hunt said their upgraded facilities resulted in a great experience for visitors and players.

The national event was won by Wayne Roberts, current Protea from KZN, who won R20 000 and will be sent to represent South Africa in the World Champion of Champions.

“Our club was where many famous players learned to play bowls, “said Hunt.

“The list included some of the best bowlers past and present, including Gerry Baker, Tinus Oelofse, Colleen Piketh and Jason Evans. Our club is part of bowling heritage.”
