Bircleigh musician gives back to the community

“I want to produce musicians, artists, and go-getters that I hope will be recognised on a national and international level."

South African musician Dumisa Justice Mabhena opened the Dumisa Music Academy in 2013 when he moved from the North West to Birchleigh.

Through the academy, Dumisa hopes to give the community purpose.

He is now in search of people with a passion for the music industry that he can mentor, hoping to give them an opportunity to learn more about music.

Dumisa said, “My dream was to start an NGO, but I failed because of the requirements.

“The membership I needed had no vision and was declined. I ended up registering for a music school,” Mabhena said.

He first opened his music academy in Swaziland.

In 2020, he opened another branch of the academy in Gauteng.

However, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, both branches sank.

Dumisa said he was inspired to help his community by sharing his love for music.

To him, music is a way of giving back to the community.

“I want to provide lessons to people that they can use to better their lives.”

He added he composed several songs and gave them to people who went on to make a living with the music.

“This will pave the way for many and a boost to open their businesses.

“I want to prepare young people to face life with confidence. I also want to produce musicians, artists, go-getters that I hope will be recognised on a national and international level,” he added.

When Covid-19 forced Dumisa to close his businesses, he began teaching music online.He now hopes to once again be able to open the doors of his academy.
